I had an emergency room visit out of town last year and was billed two bills – one from the hospital and one from the doctor. The bills were almost identical so I paid the hospital bill immediately. The other bill, I mistook for the hospital bill and assumed it was paid. I even called back to confirm. After a couple of months, it was turned over to a collections agency, which I paid but they still reported it on my credit. It knocked my credit back from 780 down to 680 immediately, causing me to not qualify for a loan which I had previously applied and qualified for.
